This type of peroxide is found in a wide variety of products outside of skincare (hair bleach and teeth whiteners, for example) but it acts as a peeling agent in our products, helping skin to slough off dead skin cells, revealing the newer skin underneath and encouraging faster turnover. It also helps discourage bacteria from setting up shop in your pores – remember it’s a member of the peroxide family which tends to have antimicrobial properties.
Sulfur & Resorcinol
Sulfur and resorcinol can be found in small quantities in many skincare products: together they provide gentle antiseptic and disinfectant qualities to the products we put them in. Resorcinol can also sometimes be found in anti-dandruff shampoos and in some sunscreen products. Additionally, sulfur can help dry out oily skin and even aid in exfoliation.
Salicylic acid encourages skin to slough off dead cells, helps pores to open up so they can release trapped dirt and oil, then it helps kill bacteria left in pores and aids in closing up pores so they don’t get more dirt and bacteria stuck in them. It’s quite the heavy-lifter when it comes to helping clear up acne.
